Fred Phelps and Khalid Sheik Mohammed: Like Two Peas in a Pod?
A couple of months ago, the Wall Street Journal’s Law Blog had an interesting article on 911 co-conspirator Khalid Sheik Mohammad and his military tribunal trial.
I was struck at how the supposedly very Muslim Mohammed seems to hate gays as much as the supposedly very Christian Fred Phelps. That these two men from very different religious traditions and cultures both hate gays and the USA is, well, a little scary. I guess extremism does that to a person.
Here’s an interesting excerpt that from Mohammed that probably could have just as easily come out of Fred’s mouth:
Left: Khalid.
Right: Fred.

Displaying a surprising understanding of such concepts as federalism and dual sovereignty, Mohammed referenced recent decisions by state courts in California and Massachusetts under the powers reserved to them under the Tenth Amendment. “I consider all American constitution” evil, he said, because it permits “same-sexual marriage and many other things that are very bad,” he told the military judge, Col. Ralph Kohlmann. “Do you understand?”Both Fred and Khalid seem to share a “hate the sin but really hate the sinner” approach to their religious beliefs. Oh, and wishing ill on the USA too.
Left: Khalid.
Right: Fred.
